When should you use stretch film?
- When goods are placed on a pallet and need protection from dirt, damage, dust, rain, mud, or splashes.
- When goods could fall off the pallet during transport and need to be secured—whether for internal or external material handling.
- When legal regulations require it (e.g., food products).
- When you want to protect the goods against tampering.
Once you’ve determined that stretch film is necessary, you’ll likely want to do it as cost-effectively as possible. Here’s the bad news and the good news: the bad news is that unfortunately, our technicians haven’t yet found a way to make packaging cost zero. The good news is that we are working on it, and in the meantime, we strive to offer you the most cost-efficient solutions!
What different types of film are available?
- Manual wrapping: Highly mobile but expensive. It is a relatively slow technology with high unit packaging costs.
- Pre-stretched manual stretch film: Slightly cheaper than traditional manual wrapping but has weaker mechanical properties. Recommended only when pallet stability is not required and protection from dirt is the main concern.
- Machine wrapping: The most cost-effective solution. With machine film, 91% of the roll is valuable film and only 9% is core + cardboard. In contrast, manual film has only 63% valuable film and 37% core + cardboard. This means you get 50% more valuable film for the same money!

Advice from our Packaging Technologists:
- For regular packaging, use a semi-automatic or automatic machine: machine films contain much more usable film on the roll than manual films, reducing unit packaging costs.
- Use a local pre-stretcher: can reduce film usage by one-third.
- To protect products from sunlight, use opaque white film to block UV rays.
- For pallets stored outdoors, use UV-stabilized film. We offer film with up to 24 months of UV stability.
- To prevent tampering during transport, use opaque black stretch film or logo-printed film.
- To differentiate your product, we recommend custom logo-printed film.
- Over-stretching can crush the packaged products; optimal adjustment is critical. Ask our packaging technologists for proper machine setup guidance.
- Frequent film breakage is a sign of improper technology usage! If your film breaks, report it immediately—there’s a solution for every packaging problem.
- Pallets over 1 ton can also be secured without excessive film use. This depends only on film quality and optimal machine settings.
